It's pretty humorous. Homer borrows money from the mafia to bet on football. When he can't repay them he agrees to let them film an adult movie in his house to settle the debt. Marge comes home and discovers this, Enraged, she leaves and drives down the coast where she meets " a rugged yet sensitive man of science" who's life mission is to protect manatees.

Plastic cannot biodegrade!!!

"The National Academy of Sciences estimates that 6.4 million tons of litter enter the world's oceans each year. Globally, plastic accounts for 60 to 95 percent of that waste, according to a 2002 report in the "Marin Pollution Bulletin," by J.G.B. Derriak. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, 5.5 percent of the plastic consumed int he US in 2001 was recycled.

Hannah Nevins, beachcomber coordinator with Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, has found many dead seabirds' stomachs stuffed with plastic. Scientists don't know whether the plastic is poisoning the birds or if they're simply starving to death because the material is blocking their access to pray. Moore said laysan albatross chicks are also frequent victims of plastic-bounty starvation. "They die from false feelings of satiation, which result from being fed bottle caps, cigarette lighters, and toys, which they cannot regurgitate so they stop begging their parents for food." There are a whole bunch of chemicals in plastics that mimic estrogen," Ebbesmeyer said. "If a male mammal ingests them, you're altering the balance between testosterone and estrogen and you wind up with populations worldwide where the males are becoming less male." Marine debris has adversely affected at least 267 species worldwide including 86 percent of sea turtle species, 44 percent of sea bird species and 43 percent of marine mammal species, primarily through ingestion, starvation, suffocation and entanglement, according to D.W. Laist in the book "Marine Debris-Sources, Impacts and Solutions."

In the ocean, where the plastic rises to the surface, there are gyres - where high pressure zones swirl currents together "like a toilet that never flushes", according to Moore. Scientists have given gyres nicknames, like "Eastern Garbage Patch." One such gyre is reported to span 10 million square miles, which makes it as large as Africa.

Below is Earth Island Institute's Press Release on memos discovered through court process demonstrating that the Bush Administration ignored their own scientists and instead catered to trade politics in gutting the definition of the "Dolphin Safe" tuna label on Dec. 31, 2002. Earth Island Institute has sued the Bush Administration and has a preliminary injunction in place protecting the current strong federal standards for the "Dolphin Safe" label.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contacts: David Phillips (415) 788-3666 x145
Mark J. Palmer (415) 788-3666 x139

Secret Memos Show Bush Administration
Conspired with Mexico
to Ignore Science, Gut Dolphin Protection

(Note: For copies of quoted memos, please contact Mark J. Palmer <mpalmer@cal.net> or (415) 788-3666 x139 with your fax number.)

Earth Island Institute's International Marine Mammal Project today released a series of memos obtained through court action that show a pattern of deliberate abuse of science by the Bush Administration at the expense of dolphin protections from the Eastern Tropical Pacific tuna fishery. On December 31, 2002, President Bush's Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans made a legal claim that there was "no significant adverse impacts" on dolphins being deliberately chased and netted by fishermen to catch the tuna which swim beneath. This decision was meant to give Mexico and other tuna fishing nations the ability to falsely label their tuna as "Dolphin Safe" and sell it in the United States.

But Earth Island Institute sued in federal court ("Earth Island Institute v Secretary of Commerce Evans"), and won a preliminary injunction that is still in place. Earth Island's lawsuit contends that, contrary to law, the Bush Administration weakened the meaning of the Dolphin Safe tuna label on the basis of trade politics, rather than science. More than 7 million dolphins have been killed in tuna nets since the late 1950's.

Further, Earth Island took steps to obtain secret memos and other documents in the Commerce Secretary's decision record that prove that:

(1) The US government conceded in private that studies conducted by Commerce Department scientists showed dolphin populations were not recovering from depleted status, likely caused by the tuna fishery; and

(2) Mexico and other tuna fishing nations put intense political pressure on the Commerce Dept. to ignore its own scientific conclusions.

More than 300 documents were withheld from the court record. The Bush Administration attempted to prevent Earth Island from obtaining these documents, but federal Judge Thelton Henderson of San Francisco, after careful review of the documents, ruled on October 10, 2003 that the public interest in the case warranted releasing some of the withheld documents.

The released memos include the following statements, which contradict the Secretary's finding on December 31, 2002 of "no significant adverse impacts" of the tuna fishery on dolphins:

"THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES STRONGLY REGRETS THAT THE NINTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS UPHELD THE LOWER COURT RULING STRIKING DOWN THE SECRETARY OF COMMERCE'S FINDING CONCERNING THE EFFECTS OF PURSE SEINE FISHING ON DEPLETED DOLPHIN POPULATIONS... THE UNITED STATES CAN UNDERSTAND THE STRONG DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE GOVERNMENT OF MEXICO AND THE MEXICAN INDUSTRY... WE ARE COMMITTED TO IMPLEMENTING THE AGREEMENT ON THE INTERNATIONAL DOLPHIN CONSERVATION PROGRAM (AIDCP), CONSISTENT WITH U.S. LAW AND THE INTENTION OF THE PARTIES TO THE AIDCP TO OPEN MARKETS TO TUNA CAUGHT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE AGREEMENT... THE UNITED STATES BELIEVES THAT IT HAS FULFILLED ITS COMMITMENTS UNDER THE AIDCP AND THE DECLARATION OF PANAMA; HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF THE COURT DECISION THE DEFINITION OF 'DOLPHIN-SAFE' CANNOT BE CHANGED AT THIS MOMENT."

-- Secretary of State Colin Powell to U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Jeffrey Davidow, Cable asking the Ambassador to convey the message to the Government of Mexico, August 15, 2001.

"A determination of 'no significant adverse impact' is not supported by the science."

-- Dept. of Commerce, General Talking Points, Outline with Talking Points for Tuna/Dolphin Briefing, Dec. 11, 2002.

"We've all seen the science. We know that dolphins aren't recovering.

"Now, let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture."

-- Talking Points: Briefing for the Secretary (of Commerce) on the Dolphin-safe Label Final Finding, Dec. 16, 2004.

"Mexico threatened to look for alternative legal and environmental solutions, including withdrawal from the AIDCP (Agreement on International Dolphin Conservation Program) or taking action through an international dispute settlement mechanism such as the one provided by the World Trade Organization."

-- Major Points from September 2000 (sic) Consultations with Mexico, Sept. 3, 2001.

"The Government of Mexico has been particularly critical of the research aspects of the IDCPA (International Dolphin Conservation Program Act), as they are viewed as obstacles to a change in the dolphin-safe labeling standard."

-- Update on IDCPA Research Effort/Need for Mexico's Cooperation, Sept. 4, 2001.

"Summary: (Mexico's) Agriculture and Fisheries Secretary Javier Usabiaga invited the (US) Ambassador to a meeting on February 26 at which a team of senior fisheries, trade, environment and foreign affairs officials made a detailed presentation outlining GOM (Government of Mexico) concerns about the continued effective closure of the US market to Mexican tuna. After reviewing the legal framework and recent bilateral tuna/dolphin consultations, the Mexican team asked the USG (US government) to (1) incorporate Mexican comments into the final version of the Organized Decision Process (ODP) by which the dolphin-safe standard can be amended, (2) improve the ODP so that the resulting final finding can withstand legal challenge, (3) accept and support the dolphin-safe label proposed under the International Dolphin Conservation Program (IDCP) Agreement, (4) put an end to Earth Island Institute's 'unwarranted monopoly' of the dolphin-safe label in the US, (5) grant trade prefere!
nce to Andean countries in a manner consistent with the IDCP Agreement, and (6) seize the moment and expend the necessary political capital to resolve this issue."

-- Cable to Secretary of State from US Embassy in Mexico, Feb. 27, 2002.

"They requested that if the Secretary made a decision of 'no significant adverse impact' and it were to be legally challenged, that the US Government do everything it could to relocate the lawsuit from the 9th Circuit to another court."

-- Meeting with US Trade Representative, the US Dept. of State, and the Governments of Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Venezuela, Dec. 6, 2002.

"Congress would not allow weakening the Dolphin Safe tuna label unless the science showed no impact on dolphins," declared David Phillips, Executive Director of Earth Island Institute. "The Bush Administration has blatantly and illegally ignored their own scientists, caving in to the demand of Mexico that tuna be falsely labeled Dolphin Safe, despite killing tens of thousands of dolphins annually."

The Earth Island lawsuit and request for summary judgement will be heard before Judge Thelton Henderson on March 29, 2004. Earth Island filed its opening brief on February 2, 2004, copies of which are available on request.

The Happy Sponges by Teresa Garcia Ramos
Excerpts from LVE's Living Values Activities for Children Ages 3-7

Once upon a time there was an ocean where some very happy sponges lived. It was not just any ocean, but an ocean of love. That was the reason for their happiness -- they were always full of love.

One day, one of the sponges approached the edge of the ocean. It decided to play with the waves and roll up to the beach. At last it reached the beach. And what did it see? A girl sat on the sand.

She did not seem to notice the beautiful ocean, nor the clear blue sky, but just looked down. She didn't seem very happy. The sponge was surprised to see such a sad face on such a sunny day. The sponge greeted her: “Hello, girl! What's up? You seem unhappy. I have always heard that boys and girls constantly smile.”

The girl answered almost reluctantly, “No. Many people feel sad.” She looked at the sponge carefully and said, “I am so surprised to see a such a happy sponge. I haven’t seen such a happy face. Why are you so happy?”

The sponge answered, “It is very easy. Since I live in the ocean of love, sponges like me constantly absorb love. We share that love with others. And when any sponge is distracted and forgets to take love, then some accidents happen. Only then do some of the sponges get sad or angry.”

The girl sat up a little straighter and asked eagerly, “What do you do then?”

“Well”, answered the sponge, “then all the other sponges go to the sad or angry sponge. We fill ourselves with love, we squeeze ourselves, and then give love to the sad or angry sponge. It's easy!”

The girl said, “You are my friend, sponge. I think I would like to be like you. Do you think that it’s possible for boys and girls to fill with love and be as happy as you?”

The sponge answered, “Of course!”

And the girl said, “But I am not a sponge! I am a girl. How can I do it?”

The sponge said, “It doesn't matter, you just have to believe in love. You are like a sponge because you can fill yourself up with love, and you can give that love to others.”

The girl exclaimed with joy, “That’s great! I'm going to practice!” She took a big breath and practiced filling up with love in her mind. She smiled and said, “It is true! I feel happier already!”
